April 17th is just three weeks away. If you missed an earlier post, the due date for tax returns this year is April 17th because of the weekend and an East Coast holiday. There are other signs that the due date is getting close. First, I have started counting days (18), weekends (3), and clients left to come in (way too many). Another sure sign of the beginning of the end is that I have started receiving postcards from a company wants to buy my practice and from another one that wants me to buy one of their tax franchises. Finally, I have started to get a few calls about extensions.
The important thing to remember if you haven't finished your taxes yet is not to panic. There is still time. But please take a minute to gather your tax forms (W-2s and 1099s) and make sure that they are all there. The biggest problem I have with last minute returns is missing info and no time to get it re-issued or re-created. If you use a tax professional, go ahead and get an appointment for when you think you will be ready. That way you are on the books and don't have to worry about not getting in when you are ready. Also, having a target date can give you a little extra push to get going.
Finally, remember the sooner you get your taxes done the sooner you can stop worrying about them.
