I am sure every preparer has a list of tax issues they wish Congress would fix. High on everyone's list, including mine, is AMT. I have also blogged about Social Security and other problem areas. Most will have to go through Congress but I have one for the IRS - the e-filing of current year amended returns.
Last week I was told that it would take 8 to 12 weeks for an amended 2006 return to be finalized and refund issued. By that time, the automatic notice on the original returns have started to go out. That means worried clients even if they know the problem is being solved with the amended return. Even if amended e-filing is not possible, an indicator in the file that an amended return is being processed and to hold notices would be an alternative. That might work for other situations when the Taxpayer is working to solve the problem but keeps receiving automatic notices.
