The IRS has announced that they will be sending out 31,000 notices as part of a test program. The 'CP2057 - Automated Soft Notice' will ask the taxpayer to check their return and make sure they included all their income. If they did report everything, then they do nothing. If they missed income, the taxpayer is asked to amend the original return and pay the extra tax. This is the opposite of the CP2000 (oops letter) notices of the matching program. The CP2000 makes changes to the original return that the taxpayer agrees to or not. If not, they have to prove they are right. The new CP2057 has no such burden of proof. Must be why it is "soft."
