Thank You For Not Waiting

I want to thank my tax colleagues who have already tried to register for the PTIN using the brand new system for testing it for me. They have experienced problems with delayed e-mails, confusing questions. which browser to use and other issues. Problems which will be worked out and by the time I slip in to register, late some quiet night a month from now, registering will be a simple task.

I'm a little surprise at the number of people who didn't wait to let the bugs get worked out of the PTIN system. Look at it objectively. A brand new computer program which has only been tested under controlled conditions is not going to work smoothly in real life. Besides confusion from the form itself, there are so many variables such as the browser used, the computer system and the applicant themselves which can cause problems.  Most software designers and webmasters try to use beta testers to bug proof the program before the mass release. But the IRS really couldn't do that. Added to the problem is that the system was late to open up which built up the people waiting to get in to register. Probably more than the system was built to handle. It's no wonder there were problems.

There were bound to be problems with the new PTIN system. The biggest problem are all the people who had to be one of the first to register. (It reminds me of video of shoppers on Black Friday packed against the door of a store poised to rush in and race to their purchase.) Now, it's up to the IRS to fix some questions and procedures. But, on the positive side, it does give the anti-testing/registering people something new to complain about.
