It’s Tax Day; the due date for your Federal and most state returns. If you haven’t filed yet, you want to get the returns and any payments in the mail or electronically filed before the end of the day. If you’re planning on mailing the returns, check your post office’s final pick up time. Few post offices will postmark up to midnight today.
It’s also Tax Freedom Day; the day we have paid all our taxes for the year and begun to work for ourselves. The Tax Foundation calculates the date each year and included not only income taxes but property, excise and corporate taxes on both the Federal but the state and local levels. This year the national Tax Freedom Day is today but the Tax Foundation also calculates the Tax Freedom Day for each state. In Kansas, yesterday was our TF Day. The state with the earliest Tax Freedom day is Tennessee where it falls on March 31st this year. However, if you live in Connecticut, you won’t have paid off your taxes until May 5th. The Tax Foundation has a lot more info on their web site. Just follow the link above.
To help relieve the stress of this taxing day, look around for stores and restaurants that have tax specials. McDonalds has a special deal if you buy certain sandwiches and Sonic Drive-In has half price soft drinks and slushes all day. And there are a whole lot more.
Happy Tax Day!
