Because of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), tax pros are finding their junk mail and e-mail has increased since they received their PTIN. The IRS is required to release certain information like their name, credentials and listing info for their business (name, address, phone number, website and e-mail). This has not sat well with many PTIN holders and the IRS has made changes to the PTIN registration page. “Permanent Mailing Address” has become “Personal Mailing Address” and therefore not subject to required disclosure. The IRS will now allow a PO Box number to be used instead of a street address.
For all the details on how to change your info, check out the IRS website FIOA page. It also contains a link to the FTC’s info about spam violations and how to report them.
