Looks like changes are being made to the PTIN Account System on IRS.gov. Based on tax pro feedback and user testing at last year’s IRS Forum in Las Vegas, the service is making changes to the user interface. The first changes were made this past Friday to make retrieving login info easier. By October, the IRS will have made changes to make renewing a PTIN easier.
This is also a good time to take the RTRP test. I keep hearing about preparers who are planning on waiting until after tax season next year. I can understand procrastination but I would be concerned about getting a testing slot by waiting until the last minute. Remember after Dec. 31, 2013, preparers will have to have passed the RTRP in order to prepare tax returns. The IRS says it’s not planning on extending the deadline.

I would also add that from a marketing point of view becoming a RTRP before the next tax season will be paramount. All the H&R Block staff have to be RTRPs to be taken on this year. That means us independents better become RTRPs as well otherwise we are going to be at a distinct disadvantage when marketing our services later this year and early in 2013.
