A client called today about a phone call she just received from someone who said he was from the IRS. He even gave her a name and badge number. For some reason he hung up when he discovered that she and her husband had gotten married in 2014. But before that, he had asked for her Social Security Number, date of birth and address. Information he could use to wreak havoc with her life. She didn’t give him any information but some taxpayers do.
The phishing scum rely on most people’s fear of dealing with the IRS. They use intimidation to get what they need to make your life miserable. The fact that the phone calls and emails continue mean that there are people who are giving them personal information.
So, please share with your friends and family that the IRS does not initiate contact by phone or email. They will send you a notice by mail to the most recent address they have for you.
